President Biden has proposed a $2 trillion infrastructure plan that he says would fix 20,000 miles of roads and 10,000 bridges. A closer look under the hood shows the plan has $80 billion set aside for improving America’s rail system, which every NJTransit commuter can appreciate.
Another part of the plan will work on securing tunnels and improving roads and bridges. New Jersey in particular stands to benefit, not only in safer transportation but in the creation of jobs and the reduction of pollution.
The plan aims to address climate change and racial inequities that are inherent in bad infrastructure. Among other things it would replace 100% of the nation’s lead pipes and service lines, making drinking water safe for hundreds of thousands of Americans, particularly children.
To pay for the plan, Biden proposes taxes on giant corporations.
