Your CDC Members

Every four years residents elect two Democratic County Committee members from each of Cranbury’s three districts during the annual primary elections.

Bio

Chair
Cassie Shea
District 2

Cassie is serving her second term on the CDC. She earned her undergraduate degree in American Studies from Rutgers College. She has a Masters in Education from the Rutgers Graduate School of Education with a specialization in Creative Arts Education. She has worked in public education as a kindergarten and first grade teacher for 17 years. Cassie is a proud member of the New Jersey Education Association and has served as a representative for her school and district. Cassie has two children in the Cranbury School and one at Princeton High School and has lived here with her husband since 2008. She is an active member of the Cranbury School PTO and serves as the Pumpkin Night Chairperson. She worked on the Strategic Planning Committee to help develop mission and vision statements for the school district. Cassie works with the Cranbury Education Foundation as Crafter Coordinator for their annual Craft Show. Cassie and her husband own a small business in Cranbury which they began in 2009. Cassie’s favorite Cranbury tradition is riding her bike for pizza and ice cream with her family.

Laura Zurfluh
District 1

Laura is currently serving her third elected term on the CDC. She is a veterinarian at Nottingham Animal Hospital. As a CDC member, Laura has expanded outreach efforts, educated residents about the purpose and value of the CDC, and helped recruit new and vibrant candidates to run for Township Committee. Laura is also involved in state and national political issues through the Indivisible organization. She has volunteered for political campaigns such as Congressman Andy Kim’s and led and organized marches and rallies throughout the state.


Treasurer
Dan Harshbarger
District 1

Dan was first elected to the Committee in June 2019 and is now serving his second term as of 2023. He ran with a goal to improve communication within our community and between our legislators and their constituents. He believes that all voices should be heard and acknowledged, and through a more open and transparent decision-making process, we can build a more cohesive community. He has actively participated in several township efforts including Council on Affordable Housing. He has supported the new Library, and volunteered in "Get out the Vote" campaigns. He has served as the Pack Committee Chairman for the Cranbury Cub Scouts and as Treasurer for Cranbury Soccer, and coached EWPAL soccer. He is currently on the Clockwinding Committee.


Communication Coordinator
Holly Johnson
District 3

Holly is serving her second term on the CDC. She and her wife bought their home in Cranbury in 2009 and their daughter is now a sophomore at Princeton High School having started in Cranbury School as a kindergartener. A native of New York City, Holly is a writer, journalist, and historian, who received her BA from Cornell University in 2001 and her MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts in 2003. She is a tenured Professor of English and Journalism at Mercer County Community College. She has advocated at the township level for a reduction in truck traffic on South Station Road and for the creation of a commission that would improve outreach to and support for diverse populations within the community. She is the first openly LGBTQ+ individual to serve in elected office in Cranbury.

Aimee LaBrie
District 3

Aimee LaBrie and her husband moved to Cranbury in 2020. She is a writer and the Senior Program Adviser for the Writers House, part of the English Department at Rutgers University where she also works as an adjunct professor of writing. Aimee is serving her first term on the CDC.

MariCris McDowell
District 2

MariCris studied Marketing Communications at F.I.T. in New York City. She has worked as an Editorial Assistant at Vogue magazine, a Senior Fashion Publicist at KCD Worldwide, and as an Event Planner for Main Street Catering. She moved to Cranbury with her husband and two children in 2010. Her son is a rising sophomore at Lehigh University and her daughter is a rising senior at Princeton High School. MariCris ran Cranbury School’s After-School Program for four years, was the PHS Boys Basketball Boosters President for one term, and volunteers in postcard writing campaigns to get out the vote for state and national elections.


Emeritus Member
David Nissen

David has served on the CDC since the mid-1990s. Prior to this he served as Environmental Commission Chair and representative to the Planning Board. He is currently a member of the Zoning Board. He has served as a director/trustee of Cranbury Landmarks (preserving the old schoolhouse), Cranbury Housing Associates (affordable housing), the Historical Society, and the Library Foundation. Throughout his years in service to Cranbury’s community, David has put special focus on the preservation of farmland to limit growth and preserve township identity. David grew up in California and graduated from Caltech before earning a Ph.D. in economics at UC Berkeley in 1968. He went on to work at the Department of Energy, the Exxon Corporation, and Chase Bank. He has taught at Rice University and Rutgers, and completed his professional career as Director of the Energy Policy program at the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. In his retirement, David has followed his passion for photography, establishing BearPrint Images and presenting occasional exhibits at Town Hall.
